Fundraising Fun with the National Citizen Service

During the summer holidays, young people in Plymouth and the surrounding area have been volunteering their time to fundraise for good causes with the National Citizen Service.

Delivered by the Work-based Learning and School Partnerships team at City College Plymouth in partnership with Plymouth Argyle FC, the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme is designed to give 16 to 18 year olds the opportunity to make extraordinary friendships, learn new skills and to create unforgettable memories.

Fourteen students took part in fundraising activities in aid of local charity, Woodlands - a school which provides specialist learning for children with complex physical and sensory difficulties.

The young people organised a car boot sale to fund sensory items for the school, and 16 year old Adam Whitehead contributed nearly £250 to the cause by volunteering to have his head shaved for the charity. In total, the students raised £425 for the school.

James Harris, Professional Football Coach at Plymouth Argyle, said “The team did a tremendous job, working with local businesses and raising money for a great cause.”

The NCS team also volunteered at St Luke’s Hospice warehouse, organising donations. Those involved enjoyed this task as it helped develop their confidence and gave them the experience of volunteering in their local community.

Jodie Everson, a Schools Liaison Officer from City College’s Work-based Learning and Schools Partnerships team, said: “We would like to thank local businesses for their kind donations and support in making this project such a huge success.

“The NCS brings together young people from different backgrounds and helps them develop greater confidence, self-awareness and responsibility. It also encourages personal and social development by working on skills such as leadership, teamwork and social mixing - it’s also great fun too!

“This year’s teams have really done well and we’re pleased to be able to support so many local causes.”

The next NCS programme runs in October and applications are now open via the NCS websitewww.ncsyes.co.uk.

New-look Full-time Course and Apprenticeship Guide Launched

$
0
0

City College Plymouth has launched its new full-time courses and Apprenticeships guide for 2016/17, with a new look and including a range of new courses.

Showcasing the wide range of options available at the College, the publication acts as a comprehensive guide for prospective students considering their post-16 options.

City College offers a wide range of courses from BTECs to university-level Foundation Degrees, and the 2016/17 guide highlights their first ever level six degree course. This means that those studying sports therapy and strength conditioning rehabilitation will be able to complete their full degree at the College, rather than transferring to a more expensive university option.

The 2016/17 guide is available for free from the College or by calling 01752 305300. It is the first publication to be designed with the College’s new branding, launched this summer. Posters, banners and flyers have been putting the College’s links with Plymouth at the heart of the message - City winners, City achievers and City leaders are all encouraged to apply.

The guide also includes a special section for parents and carers which highlights the College’s outstanding links with local employers and dispels some of the commonly held myths around post-16 education.

Mike Jones, Employability & Enterprise Manager at City College, explains: “It’s true that young people need to stay in education or training until they’re 18, but this doesn’t mean staying in school. Young people have choices and full-time study programmes and Apprenticeships at the College are all great options for those looking for a difference experience that can kick-start their career.

“People often think you have to stay in school until you get your GCSEs but the College gives young people the opportunity to study these part-time, as part of their study programme.

“It’s important that young people know all their options and our new full-time guide gives students and parents all the information they need to make an informed choice.”

Be part of it! Pick up your free copy of the guide at the College’s course information drop-in events every Wednesday throughout September, 4.00pm - 6.00pm, at Kings Road, or call 01752 305300.
