Students Take Part in Live Performances at Devonport Guildhall

Students from City College Plymouth recently had the opportunity to take part in three music concerts at Devonport Guildhall on Friday 15 May.

Since December 2014, eight students, aged between 17 and 20, have been working with Plymouth Music Zone, an award winning music charity that believes passionately in the power of music to reach out and help transform the lives of some of the most vulnerable children, young people and adults across Plymouth and beyond.

Students with learning difficulties and disabilities who are studying at the College were introduced to members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, a British period instrument orchestra who secured funding to enable the students to work with both them and Plymouth Music Zone on the concerts.

Michelle Petrie, Lecturer in Skills Development at the College, said: “The students were brilliant. They were all so enthusiastic and this was a great opportunity for them to be guided by professional musicians, whilst incorporating their own musical ideas.”

Music Leader, Anna Batson, from Plymouth Music Zone, has been liaising between the College and the Orchestra, sharing her innovative ideas and working with the students at the College and Plymouth Music Zone.  Anna said: “It was a pleasure to see the students get so enthused about the sessions and enjoy the final rehearsals at Plymouth Music Zone and the live productions at Devonport Guildhall.”

Jason Wood, 20, is a City College student who has been attending the sessions and took part in the performances, he said: “It has been really great working with the musicians and being involved with the performances. I loved it!”

Plymouth Students Honoured at College Awards

$

City College Plymouth hosted its annual Student of the Year event to celebrate some of the amazing achievements of its students over the past year.

The Student of the Year event publically recognises and celebrates students who are making a positive contribution to their course, the College or the local community, and celebrates this with their course tutors, family and friends.

Seventeen students were presented with awards by City College’s Curriculum Directors. These students were recognised for making a significant contribution, often against the odds, from across the College’s diverse curriculum.

From these winning students, a further six special awards sponsored by local businesses and organisations were presented on the night. These were the awards for: Opportunity (University of St Mark & St John); Enterprise (Plymouth University); Employability (Plymouth Citybus); Community (The Herald); Equality and Diversity (Plymouth Community Healthcare); and Student Voice (Radio Plymouth).

The event was held in PL1, the College’s plush training restaurant, with a special menu prepared and served by hospitality and catering students. There was also live music courtesy of City College music students.

The awards evening was attended by each of the 16 winners and their families, their tutors, College staff and Governors, and representatives from the six sponsoring organisations.

Phil Davies, Principal & Chief Executive of City College, said: “The College’s Student of the Year event is one of the highlights of our calendar. It is our opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the hard work and commitment of a handful of our students. I only wish that we could recognise all of the 17,000 people who enrol with us each year.

“Our Students of the Year were nominated by College staff because they believe these particular students - some of whom have had to overcome significant barriers - have all shown that you can achieve fantastic results and make a contribution to your peers, the College and the wider community.

“Events like this help to remind us of the importance of giving everyone the opportunity to access education. At City College, we work hard to provide our students with a broad range of skills in addition to the specialist discipline they have chosen to follow.

“It is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students with an evening dedicated to them, sharing their successes with their family and friends, and with the support of some of our key partner organisations - whom I thank for sponsoring our special awards.”

The Student of the Year 2015 winners were:

  • Dean Moreton studying Access to Higher Education (Social Science)
  • Kristina Kuraliate and Michaela Merrifield studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business
  • Chloe Cigleris studying an Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care
  • Hannah Wilson studying a Diploma in Professional Cookery
  • Charlie Heptinstall studying a Diploma in Performing Arts

Students Plant Orchard at William Sutton Memorial Hall

$

City College Plymouth students have successfully created a fruit orchard as part of a two-week community project supporting the William Sutton Memorial Hall in St Budeaux.

Named after the founder of the Sutton Trust, William Sutton, the Memorial Hall is a charity funded centre for local residents in St Budeaux and is used by people of all ages. Previously a derelict shell, the Hall has undergone a transformation over recent years thanks to groups of volunteers. City College students have now added to this transformation, creating an orchard that will be used to produce apple juice. The William Sutton Memorial Hall plans to sell the apple juice to local residents and re-invest the profits back into the Hall’s development.

Steve Barber, Prince’s Trust Team Leader at the College, said: “The students have worked incredibly hard to ensure that they planted the orchard in the right way in order for it to thrive and benefit the Memorial Hall. They researched how to plant and grow apple trees and have also planted wild flowers to enable bees to pollenate the local gardens.

“The project has taught them valuable skills such as project management, research, team work and communication skills - as well as learning about orchards, of course!”

The team of 11 students are currently taking part in the Prince’s Trust Team programme with the College; a free programme of training that allows 16 to 25 year olds to develop key skills such as communication, leadership and teamwork skills, as well as gaining nationally recognised qualifications. The course enables young people to return to full-time education or find employment.

On completing their work at the William Sutton Memorial Hall, the students will go on to complete work placements in Plymouth to enable them to gain the necessary skills to help them to find permanent employment.

Harvey Wadas, 18, from Stonehouse, took part in the project and said: “I joined the Prince’s Trust course to help me gain work experience and work skills.

“I have never done anything like this but I’ve really enjoyed my time at the William Sutton Memorial Hall. We have cleared the disabled access meaning local, disabled residents can now access the Hall - that was my biggest achievement.”

Want to be part of a Prince’s Trust Team programme? Come to
City College Plymouth’s free drop-in event on Wednesday 15 July, 4.00pm to 6.00pm, at Kings Road or call 01752 856827 or 0796772649 to apply or for more information.
