City College Plymouth Hosts CoppaFeel!

$

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The College will be welcoming breast cancer charity, CoppaFeel! on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 October.

The team will be delivering sessions to staff and students as part of their ‘Boobette’ campaign, which focuses on driving awareness where it is needed most.

‘Boobettes’ are a group of young women under the age of 35 who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, have had a breast cancer scare at a young age or a strong connection to the disease. Using their stories, they inspire other people to think differently about their lives and bodies, educating them about the importance of getting to know your boobs now and making it a life-long habit.

Jeanette Harvey, Student Liaison Assistant at the College and organiser of the event said: “It’s fantastic that we are able to host this event. Breast awareness is such an important factor in everyone’s lives and the ‘Boobettes’ message is for both males and females – 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer as well every year.

“Their approach has proven successful at getting the attention of this younger audience and has given us the opportunity to talk light-heartedly, yet frankly about an issue that is often considered private or taboo.

“This conversation is healthy and provides the much needed awareness that will encourage a lifelong, proactive habit. Their intentions are not to alarm, they aim to educate and empower so they can help reduce the number of fatalities from this disease.”

Each 45 minute session will be led by a Boobette, who is a member of the CoppaFeel! team.

For more information about courses on offer at the College, please call 01752 305300, orvisit www.cityplym.ac.uk.

Jeremiah’s Journey to Benefit from College Fundraising

City College Plymouth has nominated local charity, Jeremiah’s Journey, as the recipient for its fundraising and volunteering activity during this academic year.

Jeremiah’s Journey is a local, self-funded charity that offers support and information to children and their families who have experienced or are anticipating the death of someone special. In the last year, the charity has directly supported nearly 220 children and indirectly supported a further 96 children through giving advice and information to their parents and/or carers. Their service is offered to families living in Plymouth and the immediate surrounding area.

Talking about the charity, City College Plymouth Principal, Phil Davies, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Jeremiah’s Journey, a local charity that does fantastic work to support bereaved families within the community.

“Every year, our students and staff organise an array of fundraising activities, in order to support the local community and those in need and this year will be no exception. We are looking forward to working with the Charity over the next academic year.”

The charity offer support in a variety of ways, tailored to meet the needs of each family. One of the ways support is offered is through their short term therapeutic group programmes for children, young people and their parents/carers.

Chief Executive Officer at Jeremiah’s Journey, Joanne Anning explains: “We use creative activities within the sessions to enable the children to express their feelings of grief; share their memories of their lost loved one; and explore effective ways of coping to build resilience. We like to provide activities for our families to do together, which allow them to have fun and build lasting friendships. A more recent development has been to extend our service to help children who have a parent with a terminal illness. By providing them with a safe space to meet others who are facing similar uncertainty, we hope that it reassures them that they are not alone.

“The support that City College Plymouth are giving is vital in enabling us to continue to help these children at such a sad time in their lives. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for helping to make a difference in the lives of grieving children.”

The College is holding an opening day on Saturday 8 November from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Come along for FREE, impartial advice and guidance to help you make the right choices. Our staff and students will be on-hand to give advice on careers, funding, including the 24+ Advanced Learning Loans, childcare and travel costs. For more information and to register to attend, visit www.cityplym.ac.uk/home or call 01752 305300.

The event is specifically for school pupils looking at A Levels, vocational courses and Apprenticeships; school leavers considering higher education and Apprenticeships; and mature students looking to gain qualifications to improve their career prospects, return to work or learn a new skill.

The Open Day will be taking place between 10.00am and 1.00pm at the College’s Kings Road site. All of the College’s departments will be taking part in the Open Day, and both staff and students will be on-hand to answer any questions about the College’s full-time and part-time academic and vocational courses. There will also be funding and careers experts available to provide free and impartial advice on funding, including subsidised travel plans, a free breakfast club and meal support, learning support, careers and how to apply for a course.

Local employers including Babcock International Group PLC, Princess Yachts International plc and Plymouth Citybus will also be attending the Open Day. They will be providing information about the different career opportunities available, what qualifications and skills they look for in potential employees, and to promote any current vacancies, including Apprenticeships.

Sportivate Money Funds Disability Football Project for College Students

$

Skills development students are being given the chance to take part in weekly football sessions at the College’s Kings Road site.

These sessions are available to students across the College who experience any form of physical and/or learning difficulties. The weekly, coached sessions will allow them to access a dedicated football opportunity in a safe environment adapted to suit their individual needs. This will allow them to gain confidence and improve their skills whilst being overseen by an experienced and fully qualified football coach.

Sue Evans, Skills Development Tutor at the College said: “Physical activity is such an important part of a healthy active lifestyle, which many young people often overlook. Having access to a specialist football session will really benefit our students as their individual needs can be met in a friendly environment, encouraging them to realise their potential.”

This particular project is one of many successful funding bids which has been submitted to Sport England by College Sport Maker, Kim Eschbaecher.  Planned courses, sports and activities for this academic year range from indoor climbing to trampolining, cycling to rugby and rounders to dedicated female fitness sessions.

Kim has been working closely with the Disability Development Officer from Devon Football Association to secure funding through Sport England’s Sportivate project. Sportivate is a £56 million Lottery funded London 2012 legacy project that gives more young people the opportunity to discover a sport that they love. The programme gives 14-25 year olds access to six to eight weeks of free or subsidised coaching in a range of sports and activities.

Kim says: “This funding is crucial in allowing free and/or subsidised health, fitness and sport opportunities to a broad range of students across the whole College. By working in partnership with sports clubs, National Governing Bodies of Sport, the County Sports Partnership, local facilities and providers, a clear pathway can be made available to students, encouraging lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.”

City College Plymouth Students Take Part in Local Community Project

Students from City College recently took part in a community project working with the Shekinah Mission and Hamoaze House.

All of the students are taking part in the National Citizenship Service (NCS) programme delivered in partnership with City College Plymouth and Plymouth Argyle Football Club. NCS brings together young people from different backgrounds and helps them to develop greater confidence, self-awareness and responsibility. It encourages personal and social development by working on skills like leadership, teamwork and communication.

The students spent their time helping to clear land at Hamoaze House in order to start a ‘Growing for Life’ project, a project which is run by a partnership between the Shekinah Mission and Hamoaze House. ‘Growing for Life’ aims to provide social reintegration and an opportunity for young people to realise their potential and raise personal aspirations through meaningful activities, learning, and team work.

Student Jacob Nettleship, 16, said: “NCS has helped me impact the local community in a meaningful way, whilst also allowing me to grow personally within a tightly knit group of people.”

Training Officer at the College, Daniel Payne added: “The NCS group was made up of 16-18 year old students from several schools from the Plymouth area. The students worked extremely hard over eight days, giving up their half-term break to focus on helping their local community. Working collaboratively, students had to identify areas of need within their local area.

“The group highlighted homelessness and substance misuse as social issues, hence making contact with Shekinah and Hamoaze House. I was extremely impressed by their dedication and energy and I know that the group were keen to represent a more positive stereotype of young people in our society today.”

The NCS is a government funded project, which allows teenagers to impact the local community, whilst also allowing them to develop personal skills. The NCS participants also took part in helping to paint a mural in a local café which is being created by the Shekinah Mission and the Plymouth College of Art.
